Beam Team is an after school format for middle schoolers that was designed and first created in 2016 in collaboration Allen Riley,
Jeff Wood, and many other minds.
The concept for Beam Team is that we offer a theme, technical guidance, a bunch of odds and ends to play with,
and a series of connected prompts and students work in pairs to brainstorm, design and build out ideas.
At the end of the program, we invite family and friends to come experience and celebrate what's been made.
The 2017 Beam Team theme was telecommunication. We made slime pumps, analog copy machines, PVC airhorns, pneumatic pianos, pom pom whisperers, and much more.
The 2016 Beam Team theme was games. We made human sized rotating mazes, built musical pinball machines, a ping-pong ball
projectile device, and created Grosé Gourmet, a card game in which players design a unique diner menu
of gross items using a set of noun and adjective playing cards.
